Michigan Maternity Photographer // Mieka + Baby Boy!
Every once in a while I take photos that jump straight to the top of my favorites list….and these definitely are some of those! It makes me want to do even better the next time…..always striving to be better is SO important!
Jay & Mieka were married last summer and I was lucky enough to be able to photograph it! I love following families through all of their milestones and getting to know them. Photographing their engagement, wedding, boudoir and now baby!! I can’t wait to see his little face!
I have a farmer friend who gives me the hook up on locations…and I am in LOVE with this one. I kinda want to move there….
Only a couple of months and this family of three will have one more!
Grand Rapids Maternity Photographer // Greg + Kara + Baby Boy!
This is my beautiful sister-in-law, Kara. Her and my brother are expecting their second baby boy and I couldn’t be more excited to add one more to the bunch. I have 21 nieces and nephews so far….and hopefully a few more to go! Kara has became a second sister to me. She’s the kindest, funniest and best person I could have ever asked for my brother to marry. I was definitely blessed with her as a sister!
The session took place on Kara’s birthday, so she had some fun and had her makeup and hair styled by the lovely Ericka from Joan & Company!
This dress ended up looking gorgeous on Kara!
It was raining…so we had to hide under tree cover the entire shoot…
My brother was a good sport and joined us for a few photos.
Grand Rapids Maternity Photographer // Derrick + Sabrina + Baby Boy!
Derrick & Sabrina have been on a long journey to get to this point in their lives. Such a roller coaster of emotions, ultimately leading to this happy moment. I was going to try and explain to you their journey (with their permission of course), but thought it would be better coming from Sabrina….so here it is, Derrick and Sabrina’s story:
“Our journey to become parents started 8 years ago. I got pregnant with our first. My pregnancy was perfect until we hit 19 weeks. I was rushed to the hospital and found out that I was already 2 cm dilated. It was at that moment I was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix. Meaning in the 2nd trimester the weight of the baby causes your cervix to painlessly dilate, resulting in the loss of your child. I was admitted to Spectrum where I’d stay on hospital bedrest in hopes to reach viability, which is 24 weeks. I was only able to make it to 20 weeks and 1 day. I had to deliver my daughter knowing that they would not resuscitate her because her lungs were not developed enough. She was born alive and laid on my chest immediately, where I watched her move her fingers back and forth. We held her and kissed her until she passed away in my husband’s arms an hour later. That was the worst thing a parent could ever go through . Before then, I had no idea what an incompetent cervix was or that you could even lose a child like that. 4 years later and many early miscarriages in between, we conceived another baby. We immediately started seeing the high risk maternal fetal medicine doctors at Spectrum in Grand Rapids. We did a cerclage which stitches your cervix closed, in hopes to get you past viability. Unfortunately we were not aware that it does not have a great success rate. I started strict bedrest at 14 weeks. We ended up in the hospital at 20 week again. My cerclage has caused my water to break. I was on hospital bedrest with our 2nd daughter for another week and a half before I went in to labor. Just like her sister, she was born and we held her until she passed a way, an hour and 56 mins later. At this point the thought of trying again was not on our minds. We thought that there were not any other medical options to help us carry a child to term and we just could not handle another loss. Through facebook pages that included women that suffer from incompetent cervix, I found another option.
Two years later we decided to give it one more try. We traveled to Chicago to see Dr. Arthur Haney, for an operation called a transabdominal cerclage. It’s a permanent band around the very top of my cervix that has almost 100% success rate of a full term baby. No need for bedrest and most women can carry on like a normal pregnant woman would. The only thing is all babies would be born via c-section so that the band could stay in place, should we decide to have more children. I am proof that it works. Today we are in the 3rd trimester, without bedrest and I’ve been on my feet working full time this entire pregnancy. My hope is to help other mothers out there that have gone through what I have. To help them cope with the grief of losing a child and to be able to offer them hope for the future. Having our maternity photos taken was such a wonderful, important day for us. Thank you Kellie, for helping us celebrate our rainbow baby by photographing another milestone passed. A Rainbow Baby is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravages of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it doesn’t mean the storm never happened or that the family is not still dealing with its aftermath. What it means is that something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds. Storm clouds may still hover but the rainbow provides a counterbalance of color, energy and hope.”
I love that some of the colorful fall leaves never fell off…
Remember their pregnancy reveal? If not, look at it over here!
LOVE how happy they are here!
Derrick is one of the sweetest guys ever. He’s always so kind and so accommodating to Sabrina. He is going to be a great dad!
Sabrina – you are a gorgeous momma! Love the red that peeks through in the photo below!
Oh Derrick & Sabrina….. As I sit in my office reading the story, balling my eyes out, I am feeling SO thankful that you are trusting me with your photos and SO thankful I get to be a part, even a small one, of your journey. I am so sorry that you have had to go through all of that, but I am extremely excited for your little man to arrive! Reading stories like this make me appreciate my little girl so much….even after it’s been a rough day with her. Thank you again! I cannot wait to photograph his first breath and first cry. It will be a moment I will never forget!
Grand Rapids Maternity Photographer // David + Mary + Baby Boy!
David & Mary are having a baby boy…and soon! I am so excited for my cousin and his gorgeous wife. One of my earliest memories of Mary is her wanting to hold every baby she ever saw. She loves playing with kids of any age and has an endless amount of patience with them. They will be great parents!
Remember them from their spring wedding last year? See their wedding photos here!
And….their gender reveal photos? They are right here!
Mary is quite the gorgeous momma-to-be!
I am so excited to meet and photograph this little guy! Congratulations David & Mary!
Grand Rapids Photographer // Ten Favorite Portrait Images from 2013!
Although I absolutely love wedding photography, lifestyle photos are some favorites too! I just adore the way families interact, all so differently. Photographing families and couples and just people in general in their own element makes me the happiest. Here are my ten favorite images from this past year!
Just like the ten favorite wedding images, this too will be a contest! Please vote for your favorite by leaving the image # in the comments. One week later we will count up the votes and a fun prize will be given to the winner!
Chicago Maternity Photographer // Ken + Holly + Baby!
Ken and Holly are only weeks away from meeting their little peanut. I cannot wait to find out if the little one is a girl or boy….what a fun surprise! While visiting Chicago last week, I met up with these two to photograph their maternity photos. It was so nice to catch up and see them again. We photographed their wedding about 3 years ago and have seen them at weddings since….but being one on one is much more fun!
Here those two love birds are on their gorgeous fall wedding day!
LOVE the city background…so different than were I normally shoot here in Michigan..

The glow from the street lights is so pretty…
Grand Rapids Maternity Photographer // Terra + Adam + Baby Boy!
Terra and Adam are having a baby! Yay! I can’t wait to meet their cute little guy. I have a feeling he is going to have dark hair
We have been lucky enough to get to know Terra and Adam for quite some time now. Terra and I were friends all the way back to middle school, then we photographed their wedding a couple years ago, and after that…Terra became my second shooter! I am so excited for them to become parents. Adam is the sweetest guy and will make such a great dad. We just love these two and can’t wait to see them become a family!
It was SO cold we could hardly stand being outside for these….so it ended up being a 15 minute session!
Another reason I love them….they can go from being gorgeous all the way to super silly in 5 seconds!
Grand Rapids Photographer // Made My Week – Vol 17!
This was a GREAT week! I spent so much needed down time with my hubby and baby girl. We also were able to make some great memories with Addy’s Grandpa Hetler during a fun vacation to Chicago. There will be a full post coming up next week about that trip
Of course, what made my week has something to do with Thanksgiving! Lots of great food, fun time spent with family and just the excitement of the holidays all around us. This time of year is the best…even when we have to battle several inches of white fluffy snow. I am so thankful to be able to live in a country where we have the freedoms to spend time with whom we like, have the beliefs (and celebrate them) that we want and just go about our lives the way that we want to live them. Every year I feel more and more grateful for this and never take it for granted. Living in a country like this makes me excited for life and excited to see what the future holds!
Here are a few sneak peeks from a few sessions that we have had in the last couple of weeks. Keep an eye out next week for full posts!
Grand Rapids Maternity Photography // Made My Week – Vol. 13!
What another great week! Every week has it’s special times and events, but this week was extra special. I love that my career is about capturing happy times and fun events. People that I hardly know at first trust me and ask me to be involved by photographing their lives. This is so heartwarming and special to me. I am always greeted with a big smile and end up sharing lots of laughter…..coming as strangers and leaving as friends.
I was able to play a small part in such an important time to one very lucky couple. Finally, after years of doctor visits and many unsuccessful attempts, Sabrina and Derrick are going to have a baby next May!
Check back in a few months to follow along their journey. I cannot wait to be a part of it!!
Derrick & Sabrina – Thank you both so much for asking me to help start off your journey to parenthood! I am so honored! Hearing your story truly touched my heart. I can’t wait see your life as a family begin. -Kellie
Grand Rapids Maternity Photography // Matt & Jonice!
I had to wait and share these until Jonice spread the news to friends and family…but…..Matt & Jonice are having a girl! So excited for some of the sweetest people I know!
